Mission Impossible lead actress files for divorce

Florida residents may be interested to hear that according to recent media reports, Paula Patton -- the lead actress of the fourth installment of the movie Mission Impossible -- has filed for dissolution from her husband of eight years, musician Robin Thicke. The news of the divorce filing is not a complete surprise since the couple had been estranged from each other for at least eight months prior to the actual filing of divorce papers.

The paperwork was filed by Patton pro per. Pro per in essence means that Patton did not have an attorney but filed the paperwork herself. In her filing, she noted that the couple has irreconcilable differences. The celebrity couple has a 4-year-old child together. Patton is seeking joint physical and legal custody of the minor child. Physical custody entails where the child will live, while legal custody concerns the ability to make major life decisions on the child's behalf, such as where the child will go to school, what religion the child will practice and health care decisions.

Other than explicitly mentioning child custody in her divorce paperwork, the actress noted that property matters are yet to be determined. However, about five months following the couple's separation, they put their $2.9 million mansion up for sale. Furthermore, Patton did not mention or address any issues surrounding alimony. According to current media reports, the high profile couple is amicably dealing with the divorce.

While it is good to see and hope for an amicable divorce or separation, the reality is that divorce may be fraught will various family legal issues, which may get complex and may require the assistance of a family law attorney. Generally, parties with children will have to deal with various important issues which affect not only them as individuals but also their children. These include legal matters related to child custody, child support, property division and potentially spousal maintenance.
