Florida Congressman embroiled in family law matter

Florida residents may be interested to know that U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson has decided to seek an annulment of his marriage of 24 years. The announcement was made by a Florida judge and signaled the end of a particularly bitter divorce process.

The reason for seeking the annulment was an allegation of bigamy. In fact, the judge was supposed to preside over a hearing to adjudicate whether the marriage was voidable based on the allegations that the representative's wife was allegedly married to a different man on the day that she wed Rep. Grayson in 1990. That hearing was put on hold following the parties' agreement to have the marriage annulled.

According to news reports, both parties have accused the other of battery. In addition to the battery allegations, Rep. Grayson's wife also accused him of financial abandonment. According to court papers, Rep. Alan Grayson is worth an estimated $31 million.

The Congressman denied any allegations of financial abandonment, claiming that he provided for his family and spent well over $10,000 on mortgage, utilities and child support as well as other household expenses.

High asset divorces can be complex, particularly when it comes to financial issues. Property division may sometimes require a financial expert to conduct property valuation. Any type of dispute during a separation can be stressful, emotionally draining and confusing. Though many people may think that they can tough it out, the reality is that having a family law attorney by one's side can make a tremendous difference and ease some of the stresses associated with the process.
