Florida congressman Grayson's divorce gets contentious and bitter

Some of our Florida readers are likely aware of the on-going bitter and contentious divorce that Florida U.S. Representative Alan Grayson is involved in. Earlier in the year Rep. Grayson filed court paperwork to annul his 24-year-old marriage. The reason cited was that when he married sometime in 1990, his wife had not divorced her first husband.

Reports indicate that during their 24-year long marriage Grayson and his wife had five children only one of whom is emancipated. The rest are minors between the ages of 10 and 16. The couple is now embroiled in a contentions dissolution which involves issues of property division, assets, alimony and child custody.

With respect to property division and assets, according to court filings Rep. Grayson is believed to be worth a little over 30 million. Grayson's wife fears that the Congressman may sell assets and has asked the court prevent him from doing so. Additionally, Rep. Grayson fears that his wife will destroy property and his possessions and has requested that he, with police escort, be able to retrieve his belongings from their home without advance notice to get his possessions.

On the issue of spousal support or alimony, his wife who was a home maker during their marriage, is now asking for spousal maintenance to maintain the standard of living she enjoyed during the marriage.

However, the most emotionally charged issue of all is the child custody of the four minor children -- twin 10-year-olds, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old. Rep. Grayson wants sole custody of his children because of the contentious nature of their divorce. Additionally, he has alleged that his wife's behavior has become bizarre making communication about their children difficult and that she has denied him contact with the children. Furthermore, he alleges that his wife is using child support payments for her own use and not for the children.

How the divorce issues of property division, assets, alimony and child custody play out remain to be seen in this case. However, in any divorce proceeding, these issues are likely to surface and will have to be resolved by the parties. Emotions can cloud judgment of the parties involved. But, working with an experienced family law attorney can be helpful when navigating the law, filing the appropriate and necessary paperwork.
