Protecting the parent-child relationship after divorce

One of the most fascinating parts of Florida parents' lives is seeing their child grow up over the years. The parent-child relationship often evolves over the years, as parents are able to connect with their child in new and unique ways as the child grows older.

Unfortunately, this relationship can be threatened when there is a custody dispute or visitation problems arising between the parents who have separated or are divorced. For instance, in some cases, an older child may begin to express a preference to remain with one parent over the other. The child's preference, in turn, can have consequences on the custodial arrangement between the parents, as it is typically one factor courts consider when deciding a custody placement.

In other cases, the custodial parent may be interfering with the non-custodial parent's parenting time. For instance, the teenage child may begin harboring negative feelings against the non-custodial parent if those feelings are expressed by the custodial parent. Or, on the other hand, the teenage child may feel the need to defend one parent if the other parent makes negative comments about his or her ex.

No matter what particular issues are at stake, it is vital that parents be allowed to have a meaningful relationship with their child as the child grows older. Custodial and parenting time orders should be respected, or modified if the right circumstances are present.

Our firm recognizes the importance of the parent-child relationship. We work closely with our clients to understand what issues they may be going through in their parent-child relationship, including custody disputes, parenting time disagreements or other issues. We can put in place a strategy aimed at protecting that relationship and setting things straight.
