With alimony awards, one size does not fit all

It is not easy work for Florida residents to earn a living and provide for their family. The slightest disturbance in a person's income can drastically affect their ability to pay their monthly bills. This can be especially true following a divorce, when individuals may no longer have the income level they once enjoyed with their former spouse.

Recently, this blog discussed the issue of alimony that often arises in divorce proceedings. Alimony can be a much-needed financial lifeline for those who are struggling to pay their bills and maintain the same standard of living after a divorce. On the other hand, alimony payments can be difficult to make for the payor spouse who has their own financial challenges.

Ultimately, each case is different and the decision of whether to award alimony will vary from case to case. In some cases, a short-term award of alimony might be appropriate to enable the recipient to transition following the divorce. In other cases, rehabilitative spousal maintenance may be needed to assist a person with developing the skills necessary to become self-supporting. Finally, durational or permanent alimony can be awarded in some cases where the circumstances call for it.

Our firm recognizes that no two cases are alike. We work with our clients to understand their needs, and we then put in place a strategy aimed at meeting those needs, no matter what side of the case they may be on. Accordingly, whether we are asking for rehabilitative alimony in one case, or defending against a claim for permanent alimony in another, we advocate for our clients' best interests.
