Tips for blended families to prepare for the new school year

Blended families may face the usual challenges most families face but may face additional challenges as well. As the end of summer nears and families prepare to go back to school, it can be helpful for co-parents to review tips to help them successfully negotiate the annual process. Families that are newly-divorced, newly-blended or both may benefit from some tips to avoid conflict when approaching the new school year.

As children have busy schedules of their own including homework, after-school sports and extracurricular activities multiple sets of parents and children are likely to interact so it is important to be prepared for some of the challenges related to blended families. To begin with, it is important to have a written parenting plan that is carefully designed, implemented and complied with by all the parties. Parenting plans can also address parenting responsibilities related to homework to help avoid the child suffering academically.

In addition, parents should work out after school commitments and responsibilities in advance before speaking to children about it and should take schedules and financial considerations into account. It is also important to focus on creating a supportive family environment and presenting that focus to the children's teachers and coaches.

Co-parenting issues can be emotional and challenging for many divorced couples and blended families but family law resources are available to help parents and families successfully navigate co-parenting. Resolving custody and visitation concerns, and developing an effective parenting plan, can help avoid stress and conflict and provide an environment that supports healthy growth and development for the children.
